Description

Ficus villosa is a highly decorative climbing plant with densely hairy leaves. Young growth often shows warm, coppery-green tones, while mature leaves remain matte, deep green and covered with fine hairs. Thanks to this unique texture, the plant looks fantastic on natural backgrounds, cork or wood, creating a “wild” green wall effect in the terrarium.

Natural beauty from Southeast Asian rainforests

Ficus villosa comes from the humid rainforests of Southeast Asia, including Borneo, Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula. In nature it covers tree trunks and branches, attaching itself with numerous adventitious roots. In a terrarium it behaves similarly – it readily climbs over structural backgrounds, cork and other decorations, gradually covering surfaces with a dense, velvety green layer. It thrives in warm, constantly humid conditions and diffused light. Good quality vivarium lighting helps to bring out the subtle tones and texture of the leaves.

Dense background cover and easy growth control

In stable conditions the plant grows relatively quickly, forming a compact, substrate hugging cover. It responds well to pruning, which allows you to control the spread and thickness of the green wall and easily rejuvenate the plant. It requires a consistently slightly moist, well draining substrate and high air humidity. It does not tolerate severe drying or hot, direct light, which can cause leaf scorch and discoloration.
IMPORTANT: avoid drying out the substrate and low humidity, as well as direct, harsh light – this can cause leaf edge burn and growth stagnation.

Ficus villosa – cultivation conditions:

  • Well draining substrate that stays slightly moist at all times
  • High air humidity and regular misting of the background
  • Optimal temperature: 22-28°C
  • Diffuse light, avoid full direct sun
  • Can be trained over backgrounds, cork and hardscape
