Neoregelia ‘Chili Verde’ is an exceptional ornamental plant from the bromeliad family (Bromeliaceae), admired for its exotic appearance, vivid colors, and low maintenance requirements. It naturally grows in the tropical regions of South America, where it clings to tree trunks and branches, creating stunning, colorful clusters in the rainforest canopy. Its epiphytic nature and unique charm have made neoregelia an extremely popular choice for terrariums, paludariums, and vivariums.
Another reason to include bromeliads in a terrarium with live animals is their ability to collect water in their central rosette. This forms small natural water reservoirs from which animals can drink or even bathe. Some species, such as frogs from the genus Oophaga, use the water stored in the leaves to raise their tadpoles.
A natural terrarium ornament
The characteristic leaf rosette of Neoregelia creates a natural water container, which in the wild becomes home to many microorganisms. In a terrarium, it serves a similar function, increasing humidity and enhancing the space with its colorful presence.
Depending on the variety, the leaves can display shades of green, red, pink, purple, or yellow, often with contrasting stripes or spots. This makes the plant perfectly complement other tropical species such as mosses, ferns, anubias, or philodendrons, creating realistic, nature-inspired biotopes.
Cultivation conditions in a terrarium
Neoregelia thrives in a warm, humid environment, with a temperature range of 22–28°C (72–82°F) and air humidity between 60–90%. The plant prefers bright, diffused light, so it’s best placed near a good-quality LED light source, which also enhances its coloration. It can be attached to decorative branches, cork, or rocks, or placed in a well-ventilated, organic substrate. Thanks to its epiphytic nature, it can grow without soil, making it easy to arrange in any setup.
Easy care and durability
Neoregelia requires no complicated care – simply mist the leaves regularly and keep the water in the rosette topped up. It doesn’t need heavy fertilization, though gentle plant-specific nutrients can be used. The plant is hardy, long-lasting, and retains its beautiful appearance for a long time, making it perfect for both beginner and experienced keepers. By adding bromeliads, you’ll bring a touch of tropical elegance to your terrarium that not only enhances its visual appeal but also improves the microclimate and comfort of its inhabitants.
How to care for Neoregelia plants:
- Attach the plant to a base using glue, fishing line, or stainless wire, or plant it in loose substrate
- If mounting without soil, wrap the base of the plant with moist sphagnum moss
- Mist the plant regularly with soft water and ensure water collects in the rosette
- Use good-quality lighting to maintain vibrant colors
- Ensure proper ventilation in the enclosure
